I've been here one full week now, which seems strange, as if I've only just arrived. It's been raining often, and a more steady fall than I'm used to, which is not unpleasant. We're still getting used to things, but it's actually working out pretty well. Everything's rather spread out here - I need to walk about a mile to get anywhere, but the area is pretty, and I like walking, so it's actually a plus. There's been some difficulties that prevent me from starting to go to the yoga studio I've lined up just yet, but that's all right, since I have my practice CDs with me. A yoga mat on top of wall-to-wall carpeting is a little odd, though.
It really is very, very pretty here, especially in our area, which is a bit like New Hope, PA, or Yellow Springs, Ohio - a bit upmarket, artsy, with a co-op market and lots of cafes and galleries. The lack of ethnic diversity takes a bit of getting used to, though, as does the lack of economic diversity - in NYC the rich and poor are thrown together in a chaotic mix - Sir and I live across the street from Section 8 housing, for instance, but here there's a clear segregation going on, which makes me feel...odd. (so does the lack of pigeons. seriously. no pigeons here. wtf?)
The building we're in is a monument to the hideousness of 1970's architechture, surrounded by lovely luarge house with generous porches and yards, in a mix of Federal and Victorian styles, without an overabundance of gingerbread. Many of them have been broken up into apartments, but some few are still single homes. Idly, Sir and I have mused about this location as a place for our retirement, but that's some ways off, and we're just daydreaming, not really planning as such.
While we managed to bring some art objects, a few small paintings, and other such things with us, the apartment still has a very 'hotel room' feel, which sometimes nags at me. It's not terrible, as it's *very* easy to keep clean, but the furniture is uniformly uncomfortable, especially the bed!
All in all it's a mix of good and bad, and because we're together, the good far outweighs the bad. That leads me to a meme I've seen going around, which asks for a bit of Shakespeare. So, for Sir - "Excellent wretch! How I love thee!" - Othello

"Here comes the almanac of my true date."
(Which, for the less literate, is two Shakespeare quotes)
